A long time ago (approx 10 years) Freenet Antenna's started the slotted waveguide project by constructing a small number of 360deg and 180deg waveguide antenna's using regular down pipe (gutter material) by hand, with hand tools.
With careful marking of the down pipes, and equally careful cutting, the waveguides were born, completely with panel-mount N-type connector and soldered dipole.
Today these waveguides are professionally made with laser-cutting equipment. You can't go wrong if you want 'sector' wi-fi coverage
Mounting the antenna's to a pole is simple with a couple of U-bolts, facing which ever direction you want. Today mine sit's atop a 3 meter pole on my roof top.
Over the years, the antenna has been home to no less than three roof tops, and has worked flawlessly for TEN years. Sure it has some minor corrosion and could probably do with a clean, but it still works, TODAY! Incredible.
Originally, my waveguide was sealed up somewhat with some weather tape. I found that this just caused the antenna to slowly fill with water. It finds its way in eventually. The best solution was to remove all tape and let the water enter the antenna and drain out on it's own. This will also reduce any corrosion/rust. Or, just leave the slots taped up, but make sure you haven't completely sealed the bottom of the antenna, incase any water does get inside.
If you are looking at providing wi-fi to a large and wide area, you can't go past the trusty waveguide antenna. Brilliant for hosting network to many clients! Today these antenna's are laser cut and built for long-life and durability.
