The GPS Tracker is a self-contained unit that:

  • Has GPS, WiFi, and LAN functionality.
  • Can continuously record its location using GPS.
  • Reports its location history in the form of GPX Tracks.
  • Provides access to the GPS/GPX data via a Web interface. Access is via the LAN (ethernet) port, or 5 GHz WiFi.
  • Is compatible with 12V DC supplies, such as in cars, trucks, boats, and solar-power systems.

Applications

  • Recording vehicle tracks while mobile, then downloading the data when the vehicle comes back in range of the depot WiFi.
  • Recording individual yacht paths during a race.
  • Tracking vehicle position in real-time while in WiFi range. For example: Trucks in an open-cut mine.
  • Others ...

Hardware Included

As every installation is different, you provide a standard LAN cable between the POE-Injector and the RocketM5-GPS.

WiFi Antennas. Two antennas are provided. These antennas allow WiFi access.

Although these are 2.4GHz antennas, they work sufficently well for robust communication back to a 5 GHz AP.

Ubiquiti RocketM5-GPS. This unit is effectively a small, DC powered Linux computer with GPS, 5 GHz WiFi, and LAN connections. It comes with an AC power supply (which you will possibly not need), GPS antenna, and pole mounting hardware.

We install additional software to add the GPS Tracker functionality.

Passive POE Injector. This short cable provides access to the 12V DC input to the Rocket, and the LAN interface.

Cigarette Lighter power cable. To allow powering from a standard Cigarette lighter socket.

Software

The RocketM5-GPS is supplied running standard Ubiquiti airOS; it is still a fully functioning airOS device.

We install some extra software that adds new functionality including:

  • GPS Location recording. This recording is done into the local RAM memory in the RocketM5-GPS. The RocketM5-GPS does not have to be connected to any network for this recording to happen, so is ideal for mobile recording. The RAM memory in the RocketM5-GPS is sufficient to record over 24hrs of continuous GPS data, at 1-second sample intervals.

  • Data downloading. The data can be accessed in two ways.

    Directly via URL addresses.

eg to download the currently stored GPS data in GPX format, this is a typical URL:
    http://192.168.1.20:2947/getgpxfile.sh

  • Settings control. The following controls are available:
    • Data Logging. This turns the recording function On or Off. When set to On, GPS data recording starts immediately.
Also, if set to On and the unit is rebooted, GPS data recording starts soon after the unit is powered on. This allows recording even if there is no computer available.
    • Sample interval. The number of seconds between GPS track points.

GPX

GPX, or GPS eXchange format, is an industry-wide format used to exchange information between a GPS recording device, and other applications that use those data.

It is easy to find GPX file viewers; many of which are free. Here is a Google search link.

After using one of our GPS Tracker units to record a GPX file, we used http://www.maplorer.com/view_gpx.html, to produce this output.

DIY

The GPS Tracker software additions we have developed are available for free download. If you already have the necessary hardware, and are comfortable with the standard Linux command line interface (CLI), download what you need here:
