This product is a single, pole-mounted (external) system unit - ready to accept two WiFi radios.

To complete the system, it is necessary to add your choice of WiFi radio cards (2.4 or 5 GHz), cables, and configuration.

Pre-Built Systems

If you don't want to assemble, and configure a complete system yourself, we offer a number of pre-built complete products:

Example Applications

The main advantage of a Dual-Radio AP is when you need two antennas on one pole, with only one POE cable-power supply. The other advantage is that the Dual-Radio AP can join the two WiFi networks via a
  • Transparent Bridged connection, or
  • a Routed connection.

One antenna has an Omni AP signal, and the other is for a backhaul to another node.

The two antennas are driven by separate WFi Radios. Not only can each antenna they be on different channels, they can be on different WiFi bands - e.g. AP on 2.4 GHz, and the backhaul on 5 GHz.

WiFi Radio Choices

This product is compatible with any two of the radio cards listed below. Both radio cards can be the same, or different. We offer a number of pre-built sytems (see above), or you can buy the individual components and make your own.
  • XR2. A 2.4 GHz, 600mW, 54 Mbps, Wireless-B/G radio card.
  • SR5. A 5 GHz, 400mW, 54 Mbps, Wireless-A radio card.
  • XR5. A 5 GHz, 600mW, 54 Mbps, Wireless-A radio card.
  • SR71-12. A 2.4 GHz, 600mW, 300 Mbps, Wireless-B/G/N radio card. It supports 2T2R (2 antenna) MIMO Wireless-N.
  • SR71-15. A 5 GHz, 300mW, 300 Mbps, Wireless-A/N radio card. It supports 2T2R (2 antenna) MIMO Wireless-N.

Pre-Loaded OpenWRT Operating System

The Dual-Radio AP is pre-loaded with the the latest OpenWRT operating system (Backfire V10.xx). OpenWRT is an open-source, Linux-based system with both a Command Line Interface (CLI) and a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Most configuration steps are done through the GUI, however some configuration and diagnostics are only available via the CLI.

Using OpenWRT you can configure each Radio Interface into a number of modes including:

  • AP (Access Point)
  • STA (Station = Client)
  • WDS (Wireless Distribution System = Bridge + AP)
  • and others
Encryption Modes available include:
  • None (no encryption)
  • WEP (not recommended)
  • WPA
  • WPA-2 (tkip, aes, personal, enterprise, ...)
OpenWRT functionality can be expanded with 100's of free, easily installable packages that add features like:
  • VPNs
  • Hotspot software
  • VoIP (Asterisk)
  • RADIUS
  • and many, many more

Pre-Configuration by Freenet Antennas

When you purchase the Dual-Radio AP, we will preconfigure the system by default as follows:

Additional configuration steps can be done by Freenet Antennas by negotiation, or by the purchaser after delivery. Freenet Antennas does not offer free OpenWRT support beyond setting up the basics.
