Active Power over Ethernet (POE) is required where the ethernet cable (CAT5) is longer than 20m. Active POE uses a higher voltage on the CAT5 cable to reduce the DC current, and hence the resistive voltage loss in the cable.

802.3af Compatibility
The POE Standard 802.3af defines certain limits and behaviours for both ends of the POE link. This injector satisfied all 802.3af specifications, except one.

What this means is that you can safely use this injector to power an 802.3af device. But if you connect a non-POE device to the other end of the CAT5 cable, this injector will still apply 48V DC to the cable which may cause damage to the device.
